Saving the Saviours
Malvika
Dekhane
The
year 2011 has been declared as the International Year of Forests. The world
over, programmes and action plans have been launched to protect forests and
increase the forest cover. Each one of us can do our bit by being frugal
consumers and vigilant protectors and quit being mere spectators.
Women can play a vital role
in conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. However, there is
a need for the full participation of women at all levels of policy making and
implementation for biological diversity conservation.
Resurrecting Ringal Bamboo Craft
The
traditional Ringal bamboo craft is in desperate need
of reinventing itself to adapt to the current scenario along with modern
scientific interventions and traditional wisdom.
Urban
Forests—Fighting for Survival
Cities are bursting at their
seams. Not only are facilities like electricity and water coming under severe
strain due to migration from rural to urban areas, forests in cities are also
increasingly threatened with destruction.
Aftermath
of a Super Cyclone
On
25 June 2009, the super cyclone AILA lashed
the Sundarban delta. The AILA experience was a major learning experience for the Forest
Department officials in managing natural disasters.
Synthia: The First Man Made Cell
Subha Sankar
Ghosh
Scientists
have announced the creation of the first man-made cell with almost limitless
possible applications. But then, it could also be a double-edged sword.
Anaimudi: A
THE Anaimudi
peak is situated in the Southern Western Ghats (Sahyadri) towering 2695 metres above sea level (masl) is the highest peak in south India among the many
smaller hills that constitute the high ranges of the Western Ghats.
Cauliflory & Cannonball Tree
Santosh Kumar Sharma
MOST plant species bear flowers
and fruits towards the outer side on their branches in the canopy. But nature
encourages diversity! There are some species in which flowers and subsequent
fruits abruptly grow from the main wooded trunk or major branches rather than
twigs and smaller branches and the finer branches usually remain vegetative.
