Photochemical reaction of trihalomethanes with diphenylamine in organic media and its analytical application








A rapid spectrofluorimetric method for the parts per million (ppm) level determination of bromoform (CHBr3) has been described. The method is based on the photochemical reaction of CHBr3 with diphenylamine (DPA) in acetonitrile media. The method has been applied for water samples also.

Crystal and molecular structure of the monothioketal of 2,4-diphenyl-3-azabicyclo­[3.3.1]­nonan-9-one












The equatorial dispositions of the sulphur atom and the phenyl groups in the piperidine ring are confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for the molecule shown below. The presence of the five membered 1,3-oxathiolane ring in the envelope conformation and the flattening of the piperidine ring in the molecule are also established.

Several quinazolone derivatives of 2-methyl-8-(arylthiocarbamido)quinazol-4-ones 2 and 2-methyl-3-(aryldenocarboxamido)quinazol-4-ones 3 have been syntheised and studied for their possible antibacterial activity against B. subtilis, B. cereus, S. aureus, S. lutae and antiviral activity against Gomphrena mosaic virus. Some of these compounds show notable activity.

Screening of natural products for new leads as inhibitors of IkBa kinase: 2-Hydroxy-6-substituted benzoic acids from plant extracts


2-Hydroxy-6-pentadecylbenzoic acid 1, 2-hydroxy-6-(8,11-pentadecadienyl)benzoic acid 2 and 2-hydroxy-6-(8,11,14-pentadecatrienyl)benzoic acid 3 have been isolated from the plants extracts by bioactive guided purification. All the three compounds show good IkBa kinase inhibitory activity.

Isolation and characterization of two novel triterpenes from Adiantum venustum





The structures of two novel triterpenes, adiantutirucallene B and adiantulanostene, isolated from the aerial parts of Adiantum venustum, have been established as tirucall-8, 22-cyclic-24(25)-ene and 13, 14-seco-8,22-cyclic-lanost-5(6),24(25)-diene, respectively on the basis of spectral analyses and chemical reactions.

New constituent from the roots of Terminalia arjuna : Antifungal agent




Evidences are presented for the structure of a new compound, 2a, 19a-dihydroxy-3-oxo-12-oleanen-28-oic acid-28-O-b-d-glycopyranoside 1 which occurs together with known substances b-amyrin and friedelin in the roots of Terminalia arjuna. Biological screening of the compound revealed antifungal activity.
