Oxalate
biosensor: a review
|
Oxalate biosensors (OBs) are based on either measurement of oxygen or
electrons generated from splitting of H2O2 or heat
released during oxidation of oxalate by immobilized oxalate oxidase. OBs are
grouped in four classes based on probe used (DO meter, electrochemical, SIRE
technology and thermochip). OBs work optimally at: time, 5 s to 15 min; pH,
2.8 - 8.0; temp., 30 - 38°C and linearity, 1.0 - 100 µM oxalate. OBs are
employed to determine oxalate in urine, serum, plasma, foodstuffs and can be
reused 80-400 times over a period of 3 days to 4 months. This review presents
OBs as well as their merits and demerits. |

A
review and comparison on some rubber elasticity models
|
This study reviews several classical continuum mechanics models for incompressible and isotropic materials based on strain energy potential and then compares ability of neo-Hookean, Yeoh, Mooney-Rivlin and Ogden models in predicting uniaxial deformation states based on experimental data from dumb-bell test specimen under uniaxial loading.

Making
real-time systems fault tolerant: a specification-based approach |
To make an event-triggered real-time system safe in application layer, this study presents a specification-based run-time verification (RV) and fault tolerance approach. For effectiveness, proposed approach is applied to classic and real-time Railroad Crossing Control System (RCCS). |

An
expert system for design of progressive die for use in sheet metal industries |
An expert system for design of progressive die (ESPDIE) has been developed for die designers working in sheet metal industries. Production rule based expert system is utilized for constructing system modules. All modules are user interactive and designed to be loaded in AutoCAD. System is capable of automating all major activities (checking design features of sheet metal parts, design of strip-layout, selection of progressive die components, modeling of die components and die assembly, and selection of materials for die components) of design of progressive die.

Performance
analysis of voice activity detection algorithm for robust speech recognition
system under different noisy environment |
This study evaluates performance of objective measures in terms of predicting quality of noisy input speech signal using voice activity detection (VAD). Implementation process includes a speech-to-text system using isolated word recognition with a vocabulary of 10 words (digits 0-9) and statistical modeling (Hidden Markov Model - HMM) for machine speech recognition. In training period, uttered digits were recorded using 8-bit pulse code modulation (PCM) with a sampling rate of 8 KHz and save as a wave format file using sound recorder software. Current framework uses automatic speech recognition (ASR) with HMM based classification and noise language modeling to achieve effective noise knowledge estimation.

Hydrodynamic
modeling of Subernarekha River and its floodplain using remote sensing and
GIS techniques |
In this study, hydrodynamic
modeling of Subernarekha River was conducted to develop a flood forecasting
model. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of study area was prepared using high
resolution CARTOSAT-1 imageries and river cross sectional nodes were
extracted from DEM. Remote sensing and GIS tools were used for data
transforming from CARTOSAT-1 stereo images, inundation and damage areas.
Results of hydrodynamic model of flood year 1997 matched quite well with
those measured by Central Water Commission (CWC). Assessment of damage due to
flooding of agriculture land, habitats, dense forest, mixed vegetation,
scrubs, plantation, water bodies and barren land for 1997 were determined and
elaborated. |

Development
and applications of a fuzzy controller for a forced circulation solar water
heater system |
This study presents fuzzy control to improve
solar heat absorbance efficiency (SHAE) of a forced circulation solar water
heater (FCSWH) system, and simplify user settings. FCSWH
system controls startup and stopping of circulating pump based on temperature
difference between outlet and inlet of collector. Fuzzy control adapts to
uncertainty of sunshine duration and modulates temperature difference to
maximize SHAE. According to results, water temperature in heat storage
cylinder increased by 3~5°C under fuzzy control system,
showing a clear advantage in SHAE over manual control
system.

Biodesulfurization of
hydro-desulfurized diesel in airlift reactor |
This study presents simulation of an indigenously designed airlift reactor (vol. 43.746 dm3) to lower down sulfur content of hydrodesulfurized diesel from 500 ppm (mg/dm3) to ultra-low level using Rhodococcus Sp. as microbial biocatalyst. A detailed modeling using TSM (tanks in series model) is proposed to demonstrate efficacy of airlift reactor for biodesulfurization.

Thermodynamic
analysis of gas turbine powered cogeneration systems |
This study proposes an integrated model for thermodynamic analysis of gas turbine powered cogeneration systems, covering simple cycle and overall cogeneration efficiency, load control by using inlet guide vanes, inlet fogging and supplementary firing. The model can be further developed for other applications (air cooling, steam injection, and trigeneration of power, heat and cooling).

Efficacy of biodegraded coir pith for
cultivation of medicinal plants |
This study presents coir pith biodegradation with white rot fungus and nitrogen fixing bacteria for cultivation of medicinal plants (Phyllanthus amaranthus, Andrographis paniculata, Bacopa monneiri, Piper longum). Proportion (25% garden soil and 75% compost) yielded an effective growth of all medicinal plants. Thus, composted coir pith with nitrogen fixing bacteria is as an effective potting medium for cultivation of medicinal plants. |

Utilization of
distillery wastewater for improving production in underproductive paddy grown
area in India |
This study presents a field experiment by using treated wastewater of cane molasses distilleries (DE) for improving cropping in underproductive area (acidic red and laterite soil) in Orissa. Grain and straw yield and nutrients’ uptake were substantially improved over normal practice. Wastewater (@ 120 m3/ha) was found as most favorable concentration for growing paddy in acidic, red and laterite soil area. |
