Methane in rice agriculture: A review

This review gives an account of mechanisms of methane production and emission from flooded paddy fields. Future methane emission scenarios show that methane emissions in 2030 in India are projected to reach 24.4 Tg (reference scenario), 21.3 Tg (medium mitigation scenario) and 17.6 Tg (strong mitigation scenario). Morpho-physiological parameters (leaf number, tiller number and plant biomass) are reported to influence methane emissions. Use of nitrification inhibitors (prilled urea and nimin) are reported to be suitable methane mitigation options.

Optimal preventive maintenance model of complex degraded systems: A real life case study

This study presents a comparison of two models to find optimum maintenance policy of complex degraded systems. Using Markov processes, optimal value of mean time to preventive maintenance is determined by maximizing availability of complete systems. Models include a stochastic degradation process, random failures and a set of maintenance actions and their effects. A real life case study is presented to illustrate implementation of models. A two-component transportation system for collecting waste utilized by Public utility company, Mediana Ni, Serbia, is analyzed.

Surface rendering of three dimensional ultrasound images using VTK

This study utilized VTK visualization tool to demonstrate reconstruction of medical image using surface rendering technique. Simulation result shows t three dimensional surface rendering of multiple slices ultrasound fetal phantom images in orthogonal view, upper left and upper right for reconstructed coronal and sagittal images and also internal view by changing position. A three dimensional reconstruction using surface rendering via VTK library is accomplished and it is found effective in terms of cost and performance in medical image.

A novel intuitionistic fuzzy approach for tumour/hemorrhage detection in medical images

This study presents a novel method to detect edges that clusters, thresholds, and then detects edges of tumour/ hemorrhage region using intuitionistic fuzzy set theory. Clustering segments image into several clusters and histogram thresholding eliminates unwanted clusters that are not related to tumour/hemorrhage region. Finally, image is edge detected, where a clear boundary is obtained. Proposed method performs better than existing edge detection methods.

Second generation of low-cost fused tapered (LFT) splitters based on POF technology

This study presents second generation low-cost fused tapered (LFT) 1 3 splitter (G2) as novel, low-cost and low-loss splitting device made from PMMA-based polymer optical fiber (POF). G2 (short taper, 0.5 - 2.0 cm) was fabricated by reformulated handwork fusion method using candle and metal tube. Insertion loss (7 dB) and excess loss (0.53 dB) for G2 is extremely low. G2 are homogenous splitters since their splitting ratio are very close to 33:33:33% with 5% of tolerance.

Industrial automation test for drill string compensator

This study introduces an industrial automation testing system of drill string compensator (DSC) using a data acquisition (DAQ) based on a wireless monitoring. Automated testing system has been designed to provide a better working efficiency of DSC. With increase in pressure, breaking point of isolation valve was found to be at 63 bar and 68 bar and stable operating limit was obtained at 55 bar and 60 bar value, respectively for two drillships.

Design and analysis of piezoactuated micropump for fuel delivery in automobiles

This study presents piezo actuated valveless micropump, designed for fuel delivery in automobiles, to determine dimensions of piezo actuated micropump, to direct PZT actuated valveless micropump fabrication and to reduce fabrication cost. Complete piezo ceramic actuator is designed and analyzed by using INTELLISUITE software. From simulation results, optimal dimensions of piezo ceramic actuator (diameter and thickness for piezo disc, silicon diaphragm) are selected. This paper also focuses on vibration characteristics of PZT actuator using Thermoelectromechnical analysis.

Homogenate extraction of isoflavones from soybean meal by orthogonal design

Factors that affect yield of isoflavones extracted from soybean meal by using homogenate extraction method were studied by orthogonal design experiment [L9(34)]. Optimum extraction conditions were found as follows: sample particle size, 60 mesh; ethanol concentration, 60%; extraction time, 50 s; ratio of material to liquid, 1 g: 20 ml; and yield of isoflavones, 0.52 0.01%. Compared with traditional heat refluxing extraction method, yield of homogenate extraction was 29.3% higher, and extraction time was significantly shortened.

6-Benzylaminopurine improves shelf life, organoleptic quality and health-promoting compounds of fresh-cut broccoli florets

Fresh-cut broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) florets were subjected to 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) treatment by dipping in BAP [0, 5, 10 and 15 ppm] for 10 min and stored at 61C. Treatment with BAP (10 ppm) significantly delayed yellowing and chlorophyll degradation, consequently maintained organoleptic quality during storage. Treated florets had higher retention of health promoting compounds (protein and ascorbic acid) in relation to control. Treatment 10 ppm BAP could be a useful method to extend shelf life of fresh-cut broccoli florets during storage at 61C at commercial level.

Evaluation of soybean/canola/palm biodiesel mixture as an alternative diesel fuel

This study examines fuel properties and performance characteristics of diesel engine fueled with three different biodiesel mixtures (soybean, canola and palm oils) and their blends with diesel fuel according to ASTM and EN standards. Blend with soybean (25%) - canola (25%) - palm (25%) - diesel (25%) reached acceptable fuel properties (kinematic viscosity 4.3 mm2/s, cetane number 53, pour point -4C). It performed 3% power loss with 8% higher specific fuel consumption. While CO and CO2 emissions were reduced, NOx emissions were increased with increasing biodiesel contents in blends. As a result, diesel usage was minimized to 25% by blending it with S-C-P biodiesels together.

Experimental investigations on sound insulation through single, double & triple window glazing for traffic noise abatement

This study presents sound insulative sandwich window constructions of high sound transmission class (STC) value for abatement of traffic and aircraft noise in Delhi city. An empirical relationship correlating with thickness of glass for various window configurations has been developed. Significant increase in sound insulation is observed at higher frequencies when either one glazing is double or both glazing are double. Increasing thickness of glass pane, coincidence dip shifts towards lower frequency and also with increasing air gap, a significant improvement in sound insulation characteristics in both low and high frequencies is observed.
