Early identification of innovative and market acceptable technologies —
a model for improving technology transfer capabilities of public research
institutes |
Presents a systematic approach for early identification of innovative technologies with market acceptability, a research that public research institutes can pursue. The developed approach allows the identification of current and future technologies and a prospective evaluation of their commercial potential, thereby helping its transfer to the market place. The method uses information from a wide spectrum of knowledge sources in structured way and addresses the potential social, environmental, and innovative aspects. It fully encompasses all the different stages required for the identification of emerging technologies and early appraisal of its market acceptability. Also suggests some measures for decision makers in public research institutes for adopting “Technology Push” approach to transfer the developed technologies into the market place. |

Meso-phase pitches from the residue of oil refinery
|
The meso-phase pitches are prepared after heating bitumen for preparation of different types of industrial products such as, carbon fibres, high-density graphite, needle coke and many other value added products. The variety of pitches are prepared by polymerization and condensation reactions during heat treatment, depending upon several factors like, rate of heating, duration of heat treatment, atmosphere, rate of flowing gas, pressure and type of vessel. Rheological behaviour indicates that polymerization takes place at higher temperature. Some pitches like, binder pitches, impregnating pitches of very high industrial importance are obtained from meso-phase pitches with due selection of different properties. |

Impact of pulp and paper mill effluent on lysimetric
soil and vegetation used for land treatment |
The paper reports on N-mineralization, microbial biomass C and N and microbial respiration of the pulp mill effluent affected lysimetric soils. The pulp and paper mill effluent has high values of BOD, COD, total solids, lignin and cellulose fibres and thus affects the various physico-chemical and microbial properties of soil while using in irrigation.

Status of air pollution due to opencast coal mining and
its control in Indian context |
Discusses the justification of selecting air-monitoring stations and focuses on the methodology adopted for sampling and analysis to evaluate status of air pollution due to OC mines. Four seasons monitoring data reveal that SPM, RPM, SO2 and NOx concentrations at different locations (industrial, residential and sensitive) exceed the permissible limit.

Temperature dependence of thermophysical properties of
untreated glass oil-palm-fibre reinforced phenolformaldehyde composites |
Thermophysical properties such as, effective thermal conductivity (le) and effective thermal diffusive (ce) of untreated reinforced phenolformaldehyde with different weight percentages of oil-palm-fibre (x) are measured simultaneously using the transient plane source (TPS) technique between 80 to 120°C. The composites investigated contain 20, 30 and 50 weight percentage of oil-palm-fibre. The experimental results at different weighted composites show that there is a variation in le and ce in this temperature range. Maximum value of le and ce is observed at 100°C, which lies in the vicinity of glass transition temperature (Tg) of these composites. Efforts are also made to predict the weight percentage of oil-palm-fibre (OPF) and temperature dependence of le and ce through the development of an empirical model. Theoretical predicted values of le and ce for these composites are in agreement with experimental results over the entire range of temperature for investigations.

Photocatalytic oxidation of 2,4-dinitro phenol in
aqueous titanium dioxide slurries |
The heterogeneous Photocatalytic oxidation of 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) is investigated in aqueous suspensions of TiO2 at the wavelength of 254 nm by using an annular flow type photo-reactor with an 8W low-pressure mercury lamp as a UV-light source. For achieving higher photodegradation, efficiencies of 2,4-DNP, optimized conditions like, irradiation time, initial concentration of 2,4-dinitro phenol, and catalyst load are established. The effect of oxygen supply and the optimum pH for achieving maximum degradation are also investigated. All the experiments are carried out in a batch recirculation mode. Experiments conducted at oxygenated and deoxygenated conditions indicate that the photo-degradation can be carried out through two different mechanisms. Optical density measurement (spectroscopy) is used to study the degradation. At a pH value of 3.5 and 10.5, maximum removal of 99 and 97 per cent is achieved within 3h of irradiation time with an initial concentration of 4 ´ 10-4M.

Different inulin preparations obtained are compared with some of the commercial inulin preparations. Sun-dried roots are as good as the fresh roots for isolation of inulin but roots dried in an oven have lower inulin content due to hydrolysis of fructans during drying.

Studies on production of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine
by clay absorbed tyrosinase |
An enzyme reactor for production of l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (l-DOPA), an antiparkinsonian agent is constructed by using Fuller’s earth adsorbed tyrosinase engulfed in dialysis sac. This permits easy retrieval of the adsorbed enzyme from reaction mixture for processing of fresh batch, thereby preventing the phenomenon of product inhibition to some extent. In this modified batch reactor, 123 mg l-DOPA/L/h is produced.

Extraction of hydroxycarboxylic acids with MIBK/toluene
solutions of amines |
Reports on the extraction of glycolic, malic, and citric acids by alamine 336 and tri-n-octylamine dissolved in MIBK/toluene mixture (1:1 volume ratio). The effects of amine type and concentration on extraction of hydroxycarboxylic acids by amines are investigated. Formation of acid amine complexes is a dominating factor in the system under consideration. The distribution coefficients and loading factors are calculated and reported.

Studies of glass sands occurring around Shankargarh,
district - Allahabad with reference to its economic viability |
Deals with the glass sands occurring around Shankargarh, district Allahabad. More than 60 samples representing the vertical and lateral variations of the lithological units are collected from different parts of the area for grain size, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses. The grain size analysis reveals that the majority of the grains are rounded, coarse to fine size grade, well sorted, finely skewed and platykurtic. Mineralogical study of the selected glass sand samples shows the presence of light minerals, i.e., quartz, mica and chert and heavies-rutile, staurolite, tourmaline, and zircon.
