Design and synthesis of calixarene
|
Calixarenes are versatile macromolecules in the field of supramolecules because of its synthetic feasibility and extensive analytical applications. This paper reviews synthesis of calixarenes and related derivatives containing heterocycles, polymers, crown-ethers, and fullerenes. Various analytical applications of calixarenes are discussed.

Optimizing brake cup formulation
using mixture experiments and principal component regression model |
This study focuses on developing an optimal formulation to improve reliability of brake cup for motors. Multiple physical properties of brake cup were simultaneously considered to determine optimal formulation using desirability function to enhance reliability. A real case demonstrates effectiveness of successfully developed high reliability brake cup at low manufacturing cost.

Three dimensional simulation of fatigue crack growth in friction stir
welded joints of |
Present paper predicts fatigue life and crack growth behaviour of
Al 2024-T351 friction stir welded joint by boundary element method, using
professional software package FRANC3D. Crack propagation is analyzed for
residual stress and stress relaxation in different friction stir welding
(FSW) regimes under cyclic loads. Linear elastic fracture mechanics model is
applied and simulated parameters are verified with analytical and
experimental observations. |

QoS cross layer architecture with adaptive enhanced distributed
channel access for efficient video transmission |
This paper addresses transmission of H.264 video over IEEE 802.11e
based WLAN by proposing an enhanced QoS cross layer architecture with
Adaptive Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (AEDCA) mechanism. Proposed
architecture minimizes mean packet loss and end-to-end delays over existing
EDCA and AEDCA mechanisms. |

Condition monitoring
and fault diagnosis of a boiler feed pump unit |
Present work highlights an experimental investigation to monitor vibration condition of boiler feed pump (BFP) unit, which is a part of BFP train of a large utility thermal power plant. Displacement and velocity were measured along horizontal, vertical and axial directions. Based on signature analysis, causes for excessive vibrations were diagnosed. Remedial measures were applied to ensure safer and fault free operation of BFP unit.

Studies on some
hydrogenation reactions using Pd (II) and Ru(III) supported catalyst |
Amorphous and crystalline phases of zirconium(IV) phosphate of the class of tetravalent metal acid (tma) salt have been synthesized by sol-gel method. These materials have been characterized for elemental analysis (ICP-AES), thermal analysis (TGA), X-ray analysis, surface area (BET method) and FTIR spectroscopy. Exchangeable protons, contained in structural hydroxyl groups, indicate good potential for tma salts to be investigated as supports in heterogenised homogeneous catalysis. Pd(II) and Ru(III) has been exchanged onto amorphous and crystalline zirconium phosphate by ion exchange technique and catalytic activity investigated in some hydrogenation reactions

Construction of
dissolved O2 metric oxalate biosensor using PVC membrane bound
sorghum leaf oxalate oxidase |
A portable dissolved oxygen (DO) meter based oxalate biosensor has been constructed by mounting a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane bound sorghum leaf oxalate oxidase on sensing part of combined electrode of an aqualytic DO meter. Biosensor showed optimum activity within 10-12 s at pH 5.0 and 30°C. A linear relationship was observed between oxalate conc. and O2 consumption [1.0-10 µM (low conc. range), 0.1-1.0 mM (high conc. range)]. Biosensor gave mean value of oxalic acid in urine [22.5 mg/l in males (n=6) and 19.3 mg/l in females (n=6)], and in serum [3.2µM/l in males (n=6) and 2.9 µM/l in females (n=6)]. Biosensor is unaffected by physiological concentrations of Cl- and NO3-.

Preparation and analysis of alkyd resin from
deodourizer distillate |
This study presents deodorizer (DO) distillate as a cheaper source of fatty acid to prepare alkyd resins. DO distillate-based alkyd resins provide encouraging film properties, except for color and clarity of resins. Thus, DO distillate based fatty acids are being explored as raw materials for alkyd resins in architectural coating applications.

Rheological properties of crumb rubber modified
bitumen- a lab study |
In this paper, bitumen is modified with crumb rubber (CR). Changes in rheological properties of 60/70 and 80/100 grades bitumen modified with CR have been studied for rheological properties using Dynamic Shear Rheometer (SR5 Ashphalt Rheometer). CR improves complex modulus and elastic response of bitumen at high temperatures. |

Application of safety feature
evaluation in single-use safety syringe design |
Usability evaluation of three of the most commonly used safety syringe types conducted in this study is through-push retract breakable safety syringe, rotary plunger retractable safety syringe and release-ring breakable safety syringe. By administering Safety Feature Evaluation Form (SFEF) and Focus Group Interviews on six professional nurses with an average professional experience over 11 years, usability problems with three types of safety syringe are found out. Six design principles have been ascertained and applied in development of a new safety syringe design, with input from a number of designers, nursing professionals and occupational safety technicians. New safety syringe significantly outperformed existing safety syringes on all evaluation indices.

Liquid
– liquid extraction of phenol from simulated sebacic acid wastewater |
Phenol was extracted from
sebacic acid wastewater (SAWW) using liquid-liquid extraction in batch as
well as serial modes by applying different solvent: SAWW (1:250 - 5:250,
v/v). Alcohols (1-hexanol, 1-heptanol, and 1-octanol), castor oil and
Aliquat-336® were used for phenol extraction. In a typical extraction
experiment involving shaking and allowing for phase separation, phenol
(75-96%) can be extracted with different solvents using solvent-wastewater
ratio (5:250 v/v). Generally, extraction (%) increased with solvent ratio;
however, chain length of alcohols did not affect extractability of phenol
much. Best extraction of phenol occurred into Aliquat 336. |
