Health, safety and environment risk assessment in gas pipelines

In this study, health, safety and environment (HSE) risk assessment was carried out using simplified quantitative risk assessment method and Geographic Information System (GIS) on ethylene gas pipeline. Risk levels observed on pipeline length were found to be medium (74.72%), high (23.89%) and very high (1.39%).


A new approach to minimize non-periodic preventive maintenance cost using importance measures of components

Based on unit-cost extended life (UCEL) measure, this study developed an optimization algorithm to minimize total maintenance cost subject to a threshold value of system reliability for non-periodic preventive maintenance (PM) model in a series-parallel system. A case study showed that developed algorithm obtains satisfied results easily and quickly in comparison with earlier studies.

An integrated ANN-K-Means algorithm for improved performance assessment of electricity distribution units

This study proposes a non-parametric efficiency frontier analysis method based on artificial neural network (ANN) and K-Means algorithm for measuring efficiency of electricity distribution units (EDUs). K-Means algorithm is used to cluster EDUs to increase their homogeneousness by handling outlines and noise. This is first study using integrated ANN-K-Means algorithm for improved performance assessment of EDUs.

Application of Taguchi method to determine resistance spot welding conditions of austenitic stainless steel AISI 304

This study presents a systematic approach to determine effect of process parameters (pressure, weld time and current) on tensile shear strength of resistance weld joint of austenitic stainless steel AISI 304 using Taguchi method. Optimum welding parameters determined by Taguchi method improved welding strength.


Analysis of factors that influence noise levels inside urban buses

This study presents evaluation of noise levels in urban buses. Noise exposure was evaluated in 80 buses of four models. Differences were found in noise among various bus models and among buses with different engine configurations. No strong correlations were found in year of fabrication and LAeq. ANOVA and Tukey’s test characterized conventional buses as noisiest buses and speedy buses as lowest noise inducing buses.


Mango peel pectin as a superdisintegrating agent

This study presents extraction and evaluation of mango peel pectin as superdisintegrant agent. Tablets of mango peel pectin had comparatively lesser release of drug as compared to sodium starch glycolate for a specific period of time. Therefore, mango peel pectin cannot be used as a promising superdisintegrant, but due to its good solubility in biological fluid and better swelling index, it can be used to prepare fast dispersible tablets.

Synthesis of calcium sulphate and sodium sulphate from waste stream of exhaust flue gases containing SO2

This study presents synthesis of calcium sulphate and sodium sulphate from waste stream of exhaust flue gases containing sulphur di oxide (SO2) and also compares efficiency of three different reagents [sodium hydroxide (NaOH), calcium hydroxide {Ca(OH)2}, and waste product of water treatment plant containing CaO] in removal of SO2. Pet coke with limestone was used for power generation in power plant during experiments. Pet coke (sulphur, 6%) resulted in emission of SO2. Experiments have been conducted to trap SO2 to produce sulphates.


Fabrication of dissolved O2 metric uric acid biosensor based on uricase bound to PVC membrane

This study presents fabrication of dissolved O2 (DO) metric uric acid biosensor based on uricase bound to PVC membrane with 87% retention of initial activity of free enzyme. Uric acid biosensor, showed optimum response within 10-12 s at pH 9.0 and 35°C. Biosensor showed mean uric acid level in serum in apparently healthy males (6.1 mg/dl) and healthy females (4.9 mg/dl). Enzyme electrode showed only 32% decrease in initial activity after 100 reuse over 60 days when stored at 4°C.

Pharmacognostic and phytochemical evaluation of leaf galls Kakadshringi used in Indian system of medicine

Kakadshringi, a well-known crude drug used as antidiarrheal in Indian system of traditional medicine, is leaf gall of Pistacia integrrima Stew. ex Brindis., Terminalia chebula Retz. and Garuga pinnata Roxb. This study presents pharmacognostic and phytochemical evaluation on galls of P. integrrima, which contains higher amounts of tannins than T. chebula and G. pinnata, is recommended as potential for antidiarrheal activity.

Heat and mass transfer study in a direct evaporative cooler

his paper presents a simple and efficient methodology to design a household desert cooler, predict performance of evaporative medium and determine pad thickness and height for achieving maximum cooling. A test rig was designed and fabricated to collect experimental data. Predictions of air condition at cooler outlet for given input conditions agree satisfactorily for air exit temperature (+15%) and humidity ratio (+10%). Results are useful for size selection of medium geometry required for an evaporative cooler design.

Enhancement of biomethanization by pretreatment of limed fleshings from tanneries

This study presents effect of pretreatment using anaerobic inoculum (PT-AI) and thermo-chemical pretreatment (PT-TC) on solubilization of limed fleshings (LFs). Solubilization of LF in PT-AI (93.3%) was more than PT-TC. From biochemical methane potential (BMP) studies, LFs with PT-AI generated 0.16 m3 of CH4 /kg CODtotal added, which was 2.7 and 1.5 times more than LFs pretreated with NaOH and KOH respectively.
