Management of waste poly vinyl chloride (PVC) through chemical modification

This review presents a strategy for management of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) waste by chemical modification as a viable method. PVC contains chlorine as a source to attack by nucleophiles (Nu-) and resultant product can be used for various applications due to its conductivity, antibacterial and ion exchange properties. Prominently used Nu- are I-, SCN-, OH-, N3-, phthalimide anion and concentrated alkali solution in the presence of O2 as oxidants.

Three dimensional nuchal translucency assessment using magnetic resonance reconstruction imaging

This study presents an open-source 3D reconstruction and visualization technique using Visualization Toolkit (VTK) on magnetic resonance image (MRI) for Nuchal Translucency (NT) assessment. Real time 3D reconstruction model can be achieved through a series of computation processes, which include DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine) sources manipulation, grey interpolations, ray casting, color and opacity transfer function, and volume rendering. Experimental simulations show that 3D measurements of NT provide higher accuracy and consistency of thickness measurement.

Ultrasonic signal compressive detection with sub-Nquist sampling rate

This study presents a compressed sensing (CS) based sampling approach for repetitive ultrasonic signal. Proposed system considers recovering ultrasonic signal with high equivalent sampling frequency from samples captured using analog-to-digital converter (ADC) clocked at a rate lower than Nyquist rate. A basis function is constructed to realize ultrasonic signal sparse representation, which paves the way for applying CS theory to ultrasonic signal sub-Nyquist sampling. A sampling architecture, applicable for ultrasonic compressive detection, is developed. With this sampling system, an ultrasonic signal sampled at ultra-low rate, but still can be recovered with overwhelming probability.

Optimization of extraction conditions of total phenol from lotus (Nelumbo nuficera Gaertn) rhizome

Operating factors affecting yield of total phenol and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) value of extracts from lotus rhizome were studied by orthogonal design experiment (L9(34)) based on single factor experiments. Optimum extraction conditions on yield of total phenol were found as follows: ratio of material to liquid, 1 g: 6 ml; extraction temperature, 70 oC; extraction time, 2 h; and ethanol concentration, 40%. For FRAP value, optimal parameters were as follows: ratio of material to liquid, 1 g: 8 ml; extraction temperature, 50 oC; extraction time, 0.5 h; and ethanol concentration 40%.

Comparative evaluation of various sorbent decontaminants against sulphur mustard

This study evaluates sorbent decontaminants [fullers earth (FE) , fast act (FA), activated alumina (AA), mixed oxide aerogel Al2O3-CuO (MOA), nanosized TiO2 (NT)] for physical removal efficiency and chemical reactivity using gas chromatography against sulphur mustard (HD) contaminated surfaces of glass, metal, painted metal, and rubber. NT exhibited superior physical removal efficiency and chemical reactivity against HD, thus proving as potential sorbent decontaminant against chemical warfare agent (CWA) spills.

Analysis of femoral trochanters morphology based on geometrical model

This study presents morphological analysis of 20 scans of femur samples from European (Serbian) adults from trochanteric region based on the customized computer aided reverse modeling procedure. Results indicated that trochanteric region is a separate morphological unit of proximal femur, named trochanteric wedge or canoe. This new perceiving of trochanteric region seems to provide a better understanding of trochanteric wedge volume and, therefore, better trochanter fractures treatment, operation planning, implant and endoprothesis design and selection. Also, it brings a new light to anatomy of proximal femur, its biomechanics and ossification.

Biogas production through mixed fruit wastes biodegradation

This study presents biogas production from fruit wastes at ambient temperature using anaerobic batch digester (500 ml). Co-digestion of fruit wastes were carried out with rice bran and cow dung. Biogas production from different samples was as follows: Sample A (fruit waste), 363; sample B (fruit waste, 75% + cow dung, 25%), 405; sample C (fruit waste, 75% + rice bran, 25%), 315; and sample D (fruit waste, 50% + rice bran, 25% + cow dung, 25%), 381 ml. From chromatographic studies, sample B has maximum methane content (80%) and sample C has maximum carbon-di-oxide content (50%). Cow dung influences digestion of fruit wastes and showed highest yield (405 mg) of biogas production.

Reduction of motor fan noise using jute composites

These two redesigned fans (Fan-1 and Fan-2) are fabricated using glass and jute fiber in propylene glycol resin by hand lay-up technique.

Passive noise control measures for traffic noise abatement in Delhi, India

This study proposes a comprehensive noise abatement programme following the best practicable and economical option (BPEO) for implementation in metro city like Delhi for reducing annoyance and ill effects of traffic noise. It reviews potential applications of noise control barriers and vegetation for reducing road traffic noise and presents a design morphology and decision matrix using TOPSIS (Technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution) approach for selection of appropriate sound barriers.

Study on degradation of H-acid by Alcaligenes latus isolated from textile industrial effluent

This study presents 100% degradation of H-acid under optimized conditions using Alcaligenes latus, isolated from textile industrial effluent. Gene/s responsible for H-acid degradation was/were found to be present on plasmid DNA. Addition of bipyridyl to incubated medium resulted in accumulation of terminal aromatic compound, suggesting that catechol may be terminal aromatic compound in degradation pathway of H-acid by A. latus. SDS-PAGE of cell free extracts showed two prominent bands close to molecular weight of catechol 1,2-dioxygenase.
