Information technology for quality and business management system optimization

A G Roy, S S Biswas, P U Baxi, R G Dhaneshwar & A N Mahajan

The paper elaborates on appropriate application of information technology as a quicker method for analyzing QMS data to achieve better team/project management and optimizing quality and business processing systems, thereby ensuring efficiency and profitability of each functional unit of an organization so that overall performance and profitability of the organization can be monitored, measured, and controlled efficiently to run a smart business.

Electrochemical degradation of rhodamine B dye in textile and paper industries effluent

Rajeev Jain, Nidhi Sharma &
Meenakshi Bhargava

Electrochemical behaviour of rhodamine B is studied voltammetrically using platinum and steel foil as working electrodes. The controlled potential electrolysis is carried out at electrolysis potential of –1.20V. The complete decolourisation results within 1 to 2 h of electrolysis.

Measured performance of a reflective thermal coating in experimental rooms

B M Suman & V V Verma

The results of study of a ceramic based thermal coating carried out in laboratory and its field application on different types of roofing sheets are described. The field study reveals that application of the thermal coating on corrugated roof with AC sheet and GI sheet reduces ceiling temperature up to 8 and 10°C, respectively. By thermal coating treatment  on a RCC roof of an enclosure, ceiling temperature, and indoor air temperature are reduced up to 4 and 2.8°C, respectively, as compared to that of the room with untreated roof. Thus, drop in ambient air temperature, due to application of thermal coating on roof surface, improves indoor thermal comfort condition.

Portable laminar air flow cabinet (STERIFLOWTM)

Rajesh Thakur, Anil Sood & P S Ahuja

STERIFLOWTM is a handy portable device meant to perform aseptic manipulations in places other than established laboratories, where conventional laminar air flow hoods are not available. It is based on the principle of a regular Laminar Air Flow, whereby electrically operated propeller fan sucks in air through a prefilter and drives it through a HEPA filter to generate a continuous stream of sterile air in the working zone. The Laminar is equipped with a UV lamp for ensuring initial disinfection of the working space. Besides being affordable, its small size and light weight allows it to be taken along with biological sample collection tours. Due to a combination of cost-effectiveness and portability, STERIFLOWTM has many potential applications.

Effect of radiation losses in the growth of optical crystals by the Czochralski process

Rajneesh Bhardwaj, Jyotirmay Banerjee &
K Muralidhar

A study on the control of the cross-sectional area of an optical crystal grown from its melt is presented. The effect of including radiation from the bulk of the material on the control parameters is examined. Results of the analysis bring out the importance of including radiation from the interior of the crystal, and the role of scattering in the crystal growth process.

Evaluation of uncertainty of measurement in calibration of electrostatic voltmeter — A case study

Shiv Kumar Jaiswal, S R Gupta, L Sridhar & Daleep Singh

Presents the calibration of AC high voltage using the precision grade standard voltage transformer and standard digital voltmeter taking a case study of Electrostatic Voltmeter. The various sources of uncertainty in measurement and their estimation based on Type A and Type B method as per ISO/IEC 17025 guidelines are also discussed. The results are reported at k = 2 for approx. 95 per cent confidence level. The standards used for calibration are traceable to the ‘National Standards’.

Chemical oxidation of spent cathode carbon blocks of aluminium smelter plants for removal of contaminants and recovery of graphite value

B Mazumder

Present paper elucidates a simple oxidation process, whereby the contaminants like fluoride are removed and many down stream industries for making various industrial graphite products can use the recovered carbon. The recovered carbons are duly characterized in terms of particle size, graphite content, and extent of contaminant removal.
