Productivity index in horizontal wells

The study investigates effect of reservoir and well parameters on the Productivity Index (PI) of a well. It analyses effect of skin due to partial completion on PI using the three partial well completion configuration of Brons and Mathews. PI increases with increased well length and anisotropy value; also horizontal wells are better united for thin beds. The wells that are perforated at equal intervals along the well bore experience little or no skin effect, thereby enhancing productivity.

Study of dental fluorosis in subjects related to a phosphate fertilizer plant environment in Chattisgarh state

Exfoliated human teeth samples related to 32 persons of a phosphatic fertilizer plant environment were collected from two categories, workers of the plant, non-workers but residents of the plant township area. For comparative study, seven exfoliated teeth samples from uncontaminated subjects were also collected. Other environmental receptors like, air, water and soil samples of the study were also analyzed for fluoride content. Plant workers have shown a higher presence of fluoride in their exfoliated teeth compared to non-worker and uncontaminated category.

Formaldehyde concentration measuring system: An optoelectronic device

Paper describes the development of an optoelectronics system, which involves the use of ultra-bright yellow LED (wavelength, 583nm) as light source. BPW21 photodiode (relative spectral sensitivity, <90%, 500-600nm) is used as detector for measurement of formaldehyde concentration. The system is based on the reaction of formaldehyde with chromotropic acid in acidic medium. Violet colour, produced after the reaction, is used to measure the concentration (0.5 - 10±0.02 ppm) in water.

Simple, compact and cost-effective optical interferometer using a grating and holographic optics

A new scheme for making a simple, compact and cost-effective two-beam optical interferometer using a commercially available diffraction grating and a single plate holographic optical element is described. The procedure for the generation of holographic optical element using a diffraction grating and the related techniques to realize the proposed interferometer along with typical experimental results has been presented. The proposed interferometer is simple, works with a single collimated beam, and is quite suitable for performing optical test studies on phase (transparent) objects in real-time.

Modelling of hot closed die forging of an automotive piston with ANN for intelligent manufacturing

This study presents the finite element modelling and analysis of an automotive piston. Several simulations are carried out using a range of process parameters such as, billet temperature, velocity of die, and friction factor. Investigations are carried out for two sets of dies for hot closed die forging of automotive piston by including all realistic process parameters. The final forging load required for manufacturing the piston is estimated along with the maximum equivalent strain rate in the final product. A generic Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model for hot closed die forging of an automotive piston made of an aluminium alloy is then developed with the help of training data obtained from finite elements simulations. The results from these models assist in achieving energy and material saving, quality improvement and in the development of sound automotive pistons. As this approach is generic in nature, other complex industrial processes can be similarly modelled.

Effect of opencast mining on soil fertility

In the process of opencast mining, several changes occur in physical, chemical, and microbiological properties of soil as a result of mining and storage. Inability to preserve topsoil is one of the basic hindrances to restoration of mined land. The acute problem in preserving mine soil is discussed. Different age classes of mine oil dumps are identified for the study. Mine soil characteristics of the dumps are compared with those of unmined soil and analyzed critically to evaluate deterioration of soil properties with respect to stockpiling. The changes in soil quality were found to be drastic in the first year and continually deteriorating every year, and ultimately the soil became unfertile.

Study on control of disastrous open fires in underground coalmines

Outbreak of open fires in coalmines is one of the major causes of disaster. To understand the complex phenomenon of open fires and to work out suitable fire suppression techniques a mine fire model gallery is designed and constructed at Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad. The gallery is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation system to monitor the important fire parameters. Three fire suppressions techniques, liquid nitrogen, high-pressure high stability (HPHS) nitrogen foam, and water mist, were tried in three sets of experiments. It was observed that either HPHS nitrogen foam or water mist can be used to control the open fires. Despite control of open fires the water mist has other advantages, which can prevent the open fire to become disastrous.

Performance evaluation of a multilateral science and technology cooperation programme

The paper attempts to gain an insight in to the expectations and satisfaction of the stakeholders and the players in a multilateral S&T programme, namely the TOKTEN (Transfer of Knowledge through Expatriate Nationals) programme, through the content analysis of TOKTEN documents and also using cluster analysis technique. The technique provides the desired visibility in bringing out the sociology of perception of players and their synergy.
