New opportunities for research in coal derived chemicals

Some specialty chemicals are monomers for new variety of aromatic engineering plastics. Some of these monomers can be prepared from 1-4 ring aromatics (alkylated benzenes, biphenyl, anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene, phenol and carbazole). Among these, 2, 6-dialkyl naphthalenes, 4, 4’- dialkyl benzenes assume greater importance. By oxidation of coal and lignite using alkaline group I metal oxide, it is possible to isolate phenolic acids and naphthalene di-carboxylic acid, which are also important monomers for engineering plastics. By developing critical aromatic chemicals from coal, carbo-chemical resources could contribute to high technology development leading to reduction in the cost of basic monomers.

Design and implementation of mobile telecardiac system

This paper presents design and development of a portable cardiac telemedicine system that continuously acquires ECG signals from high-risk cardiac patients who can move around anywhere by a mobile phone using blue tooth technology. Mobile phone has an in built analyzer to detect abnormality. In case of panic, mobile phone automatically initiates an alerting SMS to patient’s caretaker and doctor. It also initiates transmission of a sample ECG signal using FTP to medical center server via mobile network.

Wavelet based vector quantization with treecode vectors for EMG Signal compression

This paper presents a wavelet-based vector quantization technique using DCCR (Distortion constrained codebook replenishment) mechanism for compression of Electromyogram (EMG) signals. Wavelet coefficients, obtained from EMG signal samples, are arranged to form tree vectors (TVs), where each vector has a hierarchical tree structure. Vector quantization is then applied for encoding to TVs, which uses a pre-calculated codebook. Codebook is created using codebook training algorithm and is updated dynamically using SPIHT coding strategy. Signal is decoded using a copy of the same codebook available with encoder. Tests were performed on EMG records obtained from PGI, Chandigarh. A good quality of reconstructed signal and sufficient compression is achieved. An average Compression Ratio (CR) of 20.64:1 at percentage root mean square difference (PRD) of 6.12% is obtained by this technique.

Analysis of electro discharge machined surfaces of EN-31 tool steel

In this study, experiments were performed to determine parameters effecting surface roughness (SR) along with structural analysis of surfaces with respect to material removal parameters. Experimental work was conducted on EN-31 tool steel with copper, brass and graphite as tool electrodes with kerosene oil as dielectric fluid. The data compiled during experimentation has been used to yield responses in respect of material removal rate (MRR) and SR. While investigating electric discharge machining (EDM) surface by micrographs, it was observed that molten mass has been removed from surface as ligaments and sheets. In some cases, it is removed as chunks, which being in molten state stuck to surface. All three specimens machined by different electrodes showed different pattern of HAZs.

Use of range control charts in determination of variability in surface parallelisms of plates

Statistical Process Control methods are used to measure and diagnose variability occurring within processes. In this study, surface parallelisms in plates cut by circle saw block cutter machine from marble blocks were determined by Range (R) control charts produced by thickness measurements of plates. Correlation between surface parallelisms of plates cut was examined. It was suggested that the use of correlation analysis to determine similarities and differences among plates cut at different levels was significant for control of machinery and R control charts.

Effect of substituents on thermal behavior of some symmetric double schiff’s bases containing a cardo group

Thermal behavior of symmetric double schiff’s bases containing cardo group has been studied by TGA and DSC techniques at 10°C/min in nitrogen atmosphere. DSC transitions, thermal stability and kinetic parameters are affected by nature and position of substituents. Schiff’s bases are thermally stable between 173-272°C and followed either a single step or two steps degradation (fractional or integral order). Different magnitudes of n, E and A suggested different degradation mechanisms. A large and negative magnitudes of ∆S* confirmed highly ordered transition state, while positive magnitudes of ∆S* confirmed less ordered transition state.

Spectrophotometric determination of carbosulfan in environmental samples

This study presents carbosulfan determination by a novel rapid, simple, sensitive and an extractive method, which is based on alkaline hydrolysis of carbosulfan into phenol followed by coupling with diazotized p- amino acetophenone in alkaline medium. Red brown dye (lmax 465 nm) can be extractable in 2-methyl butanol, which makes reaction more sensitive with same lmax. Beer’s law is obeyed between 0.8-5.6 ppm and 0.1-0.6 ppm in aqueous and extractive system respectively. Molar absorptivity and Sandell’s sensitivity were found to be 4.46x 104 l mol-1 cm-1 and 0.0085 mg cm-2 respectively. Method has been satisfactorily applied for carbosulfan determination in various environmental samples.

Synthesis of coumarins via Pechmann condensation using inorganic ion exchangers as solid acid catalysts

This study involves synthesis and characterization of amorphous and crystalline M(IV) phosphates and tungstates, which are inorganic ion exchangers of the class of tetravalent metal acid (tma) salts. Presence of protons contained in structural hydroxyl groups indicates good potential for application in solid acid catalysis. Catalytic activity of materials has been explored by studying Pechmann condensation as a model reaction, wherein phenols (resorcinol, pyrogallol and phloroglucinol) have been treated with methyl acetoacetate to give coumarins, under solvent free conditions.

Application of Box-Benhken experimental design for optimization of laccase production by Coriolus versicolor MTCC138 in solid-state fermentation

Ligninocellulosic waste and cyanobacterial bloom was used for production of laccase by Coriolus versicolor MTCC138 using Box- Benhken design method. Empirical model developed through RSM (Response surface methodology) in terms of effective operational factors of medium pH, temperature, moisture content, inducers, groundnut shell and cyanobacterial biomass was found adequate to describe production of laccase by C. versicolor MTCC138 in solid state fermentation. Correlation coefficient (0.9758) for laccase production indicated a good agreement between experimental and predicted values. Optimal physico-chemical factors for laccase production were found to be: cyanobacterial biomass, 2.55 g; pH, 4.94; temperature, 29.96 C; moisture content, 70.96 % and CuSO4, 1.58 mM.

Quality of osmo- vac dehydrated ripe mango slices influenced by packaging material and storage temperature

Study presents preparation of quality osmo-vac dehydrated mango slices from firm and ripe Amrapali mango. Slices were prepared after peeling and cutting mango into slices followed by dehydration in vacuum drier at 40±2°C with an atmospheric pressure of 640 mmHg. Among three packaging materials (200 gauge HDPE, 260 gauge ALPE and 250 gauge COEX), 250 gauge COEX nitrogen packed followed by storage at low temperature (7±1°C) was found to be best for packing conditions judged at 6 months of storage. It retained higher β- carotene, ascorbic acid, sugar, rehydration ratio, sensory score and less moisture and non-enzymatic browning (NEB) in the product after 6 months.

Effect of liquid seaweed fertilizer on yield and quality of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.)

A field experiment was conducted in summer of 2006 to study the effect of liquid seaweed fertilizer (LSF) applied as a foliar spray (conc. 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5% and 10.0%) on okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.). Control plants were sprayed with water. Yield and nutrition quality of okra fruit got significantly increased (20.47%) at LSF spray (2.5%).

Influences of temperature on flash pyrolysis products of asphaltite

Seguruk (Sirnak, Turkey) asphaltite by flash pyrolysis in a fixed bed reactor with a heating rate 40°C min-1 at 400-800°C (optimum 550°C) under nitrogen atmosphere gave: solid residue (char), 67.68; oil, 13.28; and water, 0.99%. Seguruk asphaltite contained: asphaltene, 28.72; preasphaltene, 10.43; aliphatics, 52.54; aromatics, 5.05; and polar aromatic compounds, 3.26%. Oil obtained from asphaltite is mainly aliphatic according to FTIR spectrum.
