Using DEA to optimize a mixture design with multiple responses incorporating cost considerations

Mixture design (MD), which is commonly adopted in chemical-manufacturing, food-processing or pharmaceutical industry, is more suitable than other design of experiment methods when component proportion is a crucial influence on product quality. This study develops an optimization procedure, which utilizes Data envelopment analysis to analyze multiple inputs/outputs and costs for experiments with mixtures. Proposed procedure can optimize MD with multiple responses while maintaining low manufacturing costs, and thus enhance manufacturer competitive advantage. As demonstrated in the case of formulation design for automobile rubber bowls, proposed procedure optimizes experiments with mixtures while minimizing costs.

Landslide hazard zonation (LHZ) mapping on meso-scale for systematic town planning in mountainous terrain

Landslide hazard zonation (LHZ) mapping on meso-scale (1: 5000 10,000) may guide planners to choose suitable locations for urbanization and expansion in hills. In present work, scope of regional scale LHZ mapping technique has been increased to accommodate more detailed aspects of inherent causative factors responsible for slope instability. This technique also incorporates effects of external causative factors such as seismicity and rainfall as correction ratings. This technique has been effectively applied to prepare a LHZ map on meso-scale in Nainital area. It will be useful for town planners to plan civil constructions in relatively safe zones. In addition, environmentally unstable slopes can be given adequate attention by planning suitable control measures.

A reduced complexity MIMO system with antenna selection for high data rate wireless communications

In this paper, orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) are considered for investigating impact of receive antenna selection on the capacity and error probability analysis of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The results are compared with and without antenna selection of 2X2 and 2X4 MIMO systems. A novel approach for statistical and fuzzy association rule mining on quantitative data

This paper presents a method for deriving Association rules by using apriori algorithm, clustering and fuzzy set concepts. Association rules of quantitative data are presented with mean and standard deviation, and with fuzzy linguistic terms. A case study was done on the commodity data to demonstrate vitality of proposed method. The statistical and fuzzy Association rules, inferred from the commodity data set, are helpful for the business experts in exporting related commodities to a set of countries in a more effective way along with high profits.

A comparative assessment of two experimental methods for aerodynamic performance evaluation of a car

This paper presents experimental investigation of aerodynamics of a car named ADRENe, representative of small segment of current popular car spectrum, through wind tunnel tests. Out of two different strategies adopted for experimentation, one relies on measurement of pressures in effective domain upstream and downstream of car, and other relies on pressure distribution along centerline, over car profile. A good agreement between performance values obtained by these two methods independently, suggest their reliability and suitability for further experimentation purposes.

Environmental pathways and distribution pattern of total mercury among soils and groundwater matrices around an integrated steel plant in India

Coal burning in steel industries is chief source of Hg presence in surrounding environment. This study focused on spatial distribution of total Hg content in soils and ground water matrices along with its temporal variation within a decade around an integrated steel plant; plant, Bhilai, India. All collected samples of soils and ground water were analyzed for total Hg content using Inductive coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometer (ICPAES). Highest annual average Hg content found in soils (16.58+5.32 ppm) and ground water (0.44+0.12 ppm) has shown 4-5 fold higher concentration compared to background levels. Similar pattern of spatial distribution and seasonal trends of soil and ground water Hg has been obtained. Regression analysis has shown that significant contribution of Hg from air matrix to soils and ground water was occurred. Significant temporal variation has also been occurred.

Direct conversion of raw starch to lactic acid by Lactobacillus plantarum MTCC 1407 in semi- solid fermentation using sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) flour

Lactobacillus plantarum MTCC 1407 was used for direct fermentation of raw starch in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) flour (SPF) to lactic acid (LA) under semi- solid fermentation using Mann Rogassa Sharpe medium containing (3%) SPF in lieu of glucose (2%) as carbon source. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to evaluate effect of incubation period, temperature and pH on LA production, using a full factorial Central Composite Design (CCD). At optimum parameters (incubation period, 120 h; temperature, 35C and pH, 6.5), maximum starch conversion by Lb. plantarum MTCC 1407 to LA was 56.4%. The organism produced (L+) LA (23.86 g) from starch (55 g) present in SPF (100 g); LA production yield (mass LA produced mass starch present in SPF-1 x 100) was 43.4%.

Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by white rot fungi Phanerochaete chrysosporium in sterile and unsterile soil

Ligninolytic white rot fungus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, isolated from soil sample of petroleum refinery, was used for degradation of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs: acenaphthene, anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene), simultaneously and individually in sterile and unsterile soil. For maximum biodegradation, after 42 days of incubation, optimum conditions were pH 7.0, 30C and 5g/g PAHs concentration. In sterile soil, degradation in 42 days of incubation of five PAHs was as follows: phenanthrene, 98.96; anthracene, 92.6; pyrene, 92.2; acenaphthene, 83.8; and fluoranthene, 79.8%. In unsterile soil, PAHs degradation was low (38.94-62.89%).

Performance of copper coated spark ignition engine with methanol-blended gasoline with catalytic converter

This paper reports performance evaluation of four-stroke, single cylinder spark ignition (SI) engine with methanol blended gasoline (20% methanol, 80% gasoline, by vol) having copper coated engine [copper (thickness, 300 μ) coated on piston crown and inner side of cylinder head] provided with catalytic converter with sponge iron as catalyst and compared with conventional SI engine with gasoline operation. Brake thermal efficiency increased with methanol blended gasoline with both engine types. Copper-coated engine showed improved performance than conventional engine with both test fuels. Catalytic converter with air injection significantly reduced pollutants with both test fuels on both engine types.

Performance enhancement of natural circulating storage type solar water heaters

Performance of solar water heater was simulated for one extraction per day (at 18:59 h), two extractions per day (12:00 & 18:59 h) and hourly extractions (06:00 - 18:59 h). Annual thermal energy output (for 2 m2 collector system) was 1181.65, 1354.69 and 1585.89 kWh/m2/year at annual collector-tank system efficiency of 59.61, 68.34 and 80.0 % respectively. Maximum temperatures reached at 18:59 h was 92.3C for one extraction mode and 67.1C for two extraction mode. Performance can be enhanced (20-30%) through multiple extraction of water over the day by controllable dual tank system and a performance optimizer for electrical back up. Also, average solar radiation and weather data of Bangalore for 1977-2005 is presented.
