Evaluating profitability and marketability of Taiwan’s IC fabless firms: An DEA approach

This study characterizes performance of IC fabless firms via a two-stage production process emphasizing profitability and marketability. A data envelopment analysis (DEA) method is employed to determine operating performance of 40 leading IC fabless firms in Taiwan. About 10% of firms (9 out of 40) are found efficient in profitability performance model. In this study, marketability performance is found better than profitability performance for fabless firms. New approach identifies areas for improved IC design performance over two-stage production process.

Remote monitoring system for distributed control of industrial plant process

This paper proposes a remote monitoring system as part of Distributed Control System (DCS) of process plant. Remote plant critical alarms from DCS are continuously monitored online through Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. A report, which contains alarm details formulated through MS-Excel, is sent to respective e-mail recipients through Outlook Express. For system maintenance, M2M gateway and Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology are used in remote monitoring.

Experimental investigation of a novel heat pipe cold plate for electronics cooling

In this study, to deal with multi-heat-source and high-heat-flux heat transfer problem in confined space within electronic equipments, cold plate equipment employing heat pipe technology has been designed. Acetone-aluminum heat pipe construction composed of 8 vertical pipes with their upper condensation section and lower evaporation section connected to let working liquid and vapor flow through each other when equipment works. Heat pipe cold plate equipment has been formed and possesses excellent heat-transfer performance, startup performance and temperature evenness and can solve high heat-flux problem determining working reliability of array antennas effectively.

Chaotic behavior of electrocardiogram (ECG) signal of myocardial and non-myocardial infarctions is differentiated using neuro-GA approach, incorporating heuristically chosen phase space fractal dimension (PSFD) of ECG data. A remarkable improvement of diagnostic efficiency, sensitivity and specificity was observed in case study.

Entrainer for batch distillation of acetic acid –water system

Acetic acid–water system (AW) poses a challenge in reactive distillation, acetic acid purity and loss of acetic acid in aqueous solutions. Feasible separation of AW has been studied using entrainers but acetic acid loss in lean phase cannot be avoided. This study presents feasible region to operate column with toluene and benzene as entrainer for AW. Liquid -liquid equilibrium data and nature of tie line for ethyl acetate are given priority.

A HPTLC method for chemotaxonomic evaluation of some Curcuma Species and their commercial samples

A simple, rapid, and selective HPTLC method has been established for separation and determination of curcumin, extracted from rhizomes of different Curcuma species, which are sold in herbal drug markets of India by the name of Amraharidra. Chromatography was performed on silica gel 60F254 plates with chloroform: ethanol: acetic acid, 95: 4: 5 (v/v), as mobile phase. Detection and quantification were performed densitometrically at λmax = 260 nm with curcumin as external standard. This method was also found suitable for rapid screening of plant materials for chemotaxonomic.

This study presents bacteriocin, produced from Bacillus sp. MTCC 43 isolated from rhizosphere of root crop radish, Raphanus sativus, as inhibitor against serious food pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus and Aeromonas hydrophila). Bacteriocin of Bacillus sp. MTCC 43, partially purified by salt saturation method, exhibits very high activity (2.66 x 105 AU/ml). Viability of pathogens decreased drastically (up to 70%) within first 10 h of adding bacteriocin. Bacteriocin showed high thermostability (up to 100°C) for 10 min, expressed wide pH tolerance (4.0-10.0), and found sensitive to proteolytic enzyme trypsin.

In this study, performance of gasifier engine system is analyzed by running 5kW engine at different load conditions to check maximum diesel savings in dual fuel mode operation. Cotton stalks replaces diesel by 80% while sugarcane bagasse replaces it by 82%. By using appropriate agricultural residue, gasifier system integrated with CI engine is economically better than diesel system alone.

Effect of photosensitizers and inorganic ions on hydrogen generation from hydrogen sulfide

This study presents hydrogen (H2) generation from hydrogen sulfide (H2S) using photocatalyst [(CdS/ZnS)/Ag2S+(RuO2/TiO2)] with photosensitizers (Rhodamine B, Eosin Y, Methylene Blue and Methyl Violet). In presence of Rhodamine B, photocatalyst yields 1.3 times more H2 than control. In presence of anions (I-, Cl-, NO3-, CO32- and SO42-) and cations (Fe3+, Cu2+), photocatalyst yields less H2.

Adsorptive removal of Reactive and Direct dyes using non-conventional adsorbent – Column studies

This study presents effect of influent concentration, flow rate and bed height on packed bed column prepared by Euphorbia antiquorum L activated carbon used for adsorptive removal of dyes, Reactive Red 4 and Direct Blue 53. Adsorption efficiency increases with increase in influent concentration and bed depth and decreases with increase in flow rate. Yoon-Nelson model described adsorption behaviour of selected adsorbent-adsorbate system more reasonably than Thomas model and Reactive Red 4 adsorption behaviour fits exceptionally well with Yoon-Nelson model.

Biodegradation kinetics of benzoic and anthranilic acids by Micrococcus sp.

This study presents biodegradation of benzoic acid (BA) and anthranilic acid (AA) by Micrococcus sp. under aerobic conditions. Initial concentrations of BA and AA were varied (500-2500 mg/l) and almost complete biodegradation of BA and AA was observed within 30 h. Andrews kinetic model for single substrate was fitted to obtain maximum specific growth rates, half saturation and substrate inhibition constants. Cell growth with degrading BA (μm,BA = 0.645 h-1) was faster than with degrading AA (μm,AA = 0.63 h-1). Under biodegradation of BA and AA, first order rate constant values decreased with increase in initial concentration.
