An approach towards the query handling in mobile cellular network |
A data management scheme for processing different types of queries in a mobile cellular environment is proposed. The present work is able to give answers of different types of queries such as, proximity query, personal query, and query for any broadcast type of data by exchanging a few number of messages among different components of the network such as, mobile unit, base station, and mobile switching centre. The scheme uses two databases stored at base station and mobile switching centre. Locations of all location dependent data are represented in cylindrical polar coordinates, and the database at each base station keeps the data of the fixed objects exclusively in its locality. A suitable Query Language is proposed here to process the queries in the mobile cellular environment. Exhaustive simulation work is done to study the performance of the system for getting satisfactory answer of the query by varying different parameters like, query arrival probability and time. AHP-based
formal system for R&D project evaluation
|
The paper dwells on a judgemental model for R&D project evaluation using multifactor criteria based on hierarchic considerations. The idea is to employ formal tools in quantification of subjective evaluations where expert judgement is involved. Comparative evaluations on a priority scale are converted to quantities using the eigen vector concept. This is also the essence of the Analytic Hierarchic Process (AHP) of Saaty which as a technique is employed for R&D project evaluation. It is argued that AHP is more effective than scoring charts and utility models in priority setting based on judgemental evaluation through peer rating.

Public funding of research in biological sciences during the eighth
plan: A case study |
The Government of India is committed to exploiting the natural resources of the country for the economic well being of the people. One of the policy instruments employed is formulation of successive Five Year Plans within which are dovetailed Annual Plans to fulfill national socio-economic objectives. S&T plays an important role in the achievement of these objectives. The government policy framework will continue to encourage entrepreneurship, development of indigenous technology through investment in R&D, bringing in new technology wherever needed. Of particular interest here is the Eighth Plan strategy for developments related to biological sciences. |

On WAN usage patterns in local environment

Today’s complex network traffic is the aggregation of traffic generated by individual sources on network. Therefore, access pattern of users is of immense importance in order to model and simulate the network traffic using user characteristics. In this study, parameter matrix to characterize the individual user is identified and their correlation analysis is computed in order to find their independence, useful criterion for modeling. A mathematical model to study the impact of pulp and paper industry effluent on some functional attributes of soil microbes is proposed and analyzed. In modeling the system, it is assumed that the microbial biomass and activity increase exponentially with decreasing load of pollution at distance from the source of pollutants’ origin. The model developed is applied to soil microbial biomass C and N, respiration and dehydrogenase activity to obtain the projected data of agro-ecosystem soil fed with the effluent during crop irrigation. Methanolysis of Pongamia pinnata (karanja) oil for

The present study deals with the transesterification of Pongamia pinnata oil by means of methanol to study the feasibility of methanolysis process by using potassium hydroxide catalysts. Predicting drainage quality for sustainable exploitation of coal
|
In this paper, a technique has been suggested to know the quality of mine drainage even before the start of mining operation. The coal and associated rock samples are collected from the mine site. The geo-chemical properties are measured in terms of R-pH, pollution production potential (PPP) and acid neutralization potential (ANP). On the basis of geo-chemical properties and weathering tests, it is found that except sandstone, all other litho-types such as coal, shale, and shaly coal have the potential to deteriorate water quality and whatever the water pollutants present in the mine water are just because of interaction of these rock units with water. The techniques suggested for the prediction of drainage quality may prove helpful and can identify rock types likely to produce water contaminants during their exposure to atmosphere in a mine.

The Multielectrode resistivity imaging method has been used to study the coal seam located in the northern part of Jharia Coalfield of Dhanbad district. This method has been applied on experimental basis to know the efficacy of this technique. Structural analysis of coal ash based mine prop
|
This paper emphasizes structural analysis of post using finite element analysis and theoretical models. For small size post, an axially symmetric model is utilized to analyze stress distribution in the post and sheath, where applicable. Analyses are directed towards obtaining the distribution of confining pressure on coal ash based grout due to sheathing material. Buckling of big size post is also studied. An extensive laboratory testing is conducted to obtain engineering properties of coal ash based and crib members. Application of carbon aerogel for electrolytic removal of mercury from
aqueous solutions
|
A study has been carried out to determine the feasibility of electrochemical removal of mercury ions from aqueous solution using carbon aerogel electrodes. In this work the influence of three parameters viz., initial concentration (2-8 mg/L), pH (2-9), and charge (0.3-1.3 Ah) on the percentage removal of mercury are examined using response surface methodological approach. The experiments are statistically designed using box-behnken experimental design model. This model is also used to derive a second order polynomial equation, which can be used to optimise the key parameters for maximising the removal percentage. IPC Code: Int. Cl.7 : C 25 B 1/4

Eight fungal isolates and a bacterial community comprising four strains was isolated from pulp and paper mill effluent. Decolourization and phenol reduction of pulp and paper mill effluent was determined by fungi and bacterial isolates. Among the fungi, Paeciloymces sp., exhibited significant reduction in phenol (40 per cent), lignin (66 per cent), COD (75 per cent) and colour (81 per cent) in 100 L sequential bioreactor supplemented with 1 per cent carbon and 0.2 per cent nitrogen source at 6 h retention time. However the treated effluent of fungus subsequently treated by bacterial strain, Microbrevis luteum, showed reduction in phenol (77 per cent), colour (84 per cent), COD (83 per cent ) and lignin (72 per cent) on day one. Up and downwind sampling methodology is adopted to assess the contribution of some selected toxic elements in ambient air around a phosphatic fertilizer plant located in southeastern part of Chattisgarh State of India. Ambient air sampling for Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) and Non-Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (NRSPM) were carried out from September 2000 to June 2001 and fifteen selected elements (Fe, CA, Mg, Na, K.
