Phytochemical investigation of the flowers of Punica granatum

Phytochemical investigation of the flowers of Punica granatum L. (Punicaceae) has been carried out which leads to the isolation of four new phytoconstituents identified as 4′-hydroxynon-6′-en-yl benzoate 1, 13-(15,19,19-trimethyl cyclohex-16-en)-yl-6,10-dimethyl-tridec-10-en-3b, 4b, 6a, 13b-tetraol 2, 3,7,8,4′-tetrahydroxy-3′-myrt-8-en-yl flavone 3 and a pentaglycoside named granatumoside 4. The structures of all these compounds have been established on the basis of spectral and chemical studies.

Amongst the 12 DPTF derivatives which have been evaluated here, (2S, 3R, 5S)-2,3-diphenyltetrahydrofuran-5-carboxylic acid 2b shows highest COX-2 selectivity over COX-1.

Microwave assisted facile synthesis of amino pyrimidines bearing benzofuran and investigation of their antimicrobial activity

2-Acetylbenzofuran on treatment with substituted aldehydes under solvent free microwave irradiation afford the corresponding chalcones 2a-e. The compounds 2a-e on reaction with guanidine hydrochloride under microwave irradiation produce 3a-e. The structures of the newly synthesized compounds have been established by elemental analysis and spectral data. The compounds 3a-e have been evaluated for their antimicrobial activity.

Antibacterial and antifungal studies on some new acetylcinnolines and cinnolinyl thiazole derivatives

Novel 3–acetylcinnolines have been prepared and converted to 4-(4,8-dimethylcinnolin-3-yl)-2-methyl-1,3-thiazole, 4-(4,8-dimethylcinnolin-3-yl)-2-amino-1,3-thiazole and N-(aryl)-4-(4,8-dimethylcinnolin-3-yl)-1,3-thiazol-2-amines. The newly synthesized acetylcinnolines and thiazolylcinnolines have been characterized by spectral analysis and screened for antibacterial and antifungal activities.

Synthesis of some novel ethyl 5-methyl-6-cyano-7-substituted-2-oxo-2H-pyrano[2,3-b]pyridine-3-carboxy­late derivatives

The compound 1 reacts with N, N-dimethylamino­ethylene­malonate in acetic acid under reflux conditions to give 5-methyl-6-cyano-7-hydroxy -2H-pyrano [2,3-b] pyridine-2-one 2, which is further treated with phosphorous oxychloride to obtain ethyl 5-methyl-6-cyano-7-chloro-2-oxo-2H-pyrano [2,3-b] pyridine-3-carboxylate 3. This chloride derivative 3 is finally converted to various amino derivatives 4a-j by condensa­tion with corresponding amines. These compounds are expected to have antihypertensive activity
