Hydrodynamics of annular circulating fluidised bed drier with millet and ragi particle mixture

The hydrodynamics of the annular circulating fluidized bed drier (ACFBD) with millet and ragi particle mixture is reported. The characterisation of various regimes, such as dilute phase and dense phase flow phase are also discussed. For millet and ragi particles mixture slugging flow regime is observed for an air velocity up to 2.116 m/s and dilute phase flow regime in the range of 2.469 m/s to 4.405 m/s.


Development of wavelength dispersive x-ray spectrometer

A linear type wavelength x-ray spectrometer is designed, fabricated, assembled, and tested for elemental analysis. Samples of brass, stainless steel, and mixture of five adjacent elements (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) are analysed by this instrument. X-ray analysis peaks of different elements present in the sample are recorded on a strip chart recorder and well resolved. This instrument is utilized for x-ray fluorescence or an integral part of scanning electron microscope (SEM) for analysis.



Recycling of after-extraction-residues and flyash through composting for amelioration of alkaline soil

Study on applications of after-extraction-residues (AER) and flyash in soil amendments in alkaline as well as in normal (fertile) soils is carried out after preparation of various composts. The compost containing AER is found to be rich in nitrogen content followed by compost containing flyash. The former compost exhibits better crop performance in alkaline soil with respect to rate of germination, growth of seedlings, weight of crop and chlorophyll contents of test plant (Triticum aestivum, wheat).


Distribution of hydroxy succinic acid between water and organic solutions of aliphatic tertiary amines

The extraction of hydroxy succinic acid from an aqueous solutions into solutions of tri-n-octylamine and Alamine 336 in single solvents are hexane, cyclohexane, isooctane, toluene, and methylisobutyl ketone (MIBK) is investigated. Formation of acid amine complexes is a dominating factor in the system under consideration. Diluents are chosen from different chemical classes polar and non-polar, so as to examine the effect of diluents complex interactions. The distribution coefficients and loading factors are calculated and interpreted from experimental results.



Studies on cost reduction of ivory base paper without affecting quality

Globalisation has compelled the Indian pulp and paper industry to improve the product quality with cost reduction to survive in a globally competitive market, the best possible alternative for its survival is to reduce the production cost by augmenting the activities through in-house R&D. Attempt is made to minimize the cost of ivory base paper by replacing expensive titanium dioxide with aluminium tri-hydroxide partially, without sacrificing the fundamental properties of ivory base paper.


Treatment of pulp and paper mill effluent by 4-chlorosalicylic acid-degrading microbial community for analysis of toxicity of seedlings

A microbial community utilizing 4-chlorosalicylic acid as sole source of carbon and energy is enriched in the chemostat. The bacterial community is found to contain four different isolates characterized on the basis of morphological properties of the colonies. The isolates are identified as Klebsiella sp. (one isoate) and Pseudomonas sp. (three isolates). The bacterial community is applied for the treatment of pulp and paper mill effluent in fixed film bioreactor containing soil, sand, and gravel at the bottom of the reactor for immobilization of bacterial biomass. The community is found to exhibit significant reduction in colour (80 per cent), phenol (67 per cent), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD, 70 per cent) and lignin content (41 per cent) after treatment for 15 d. The effluent treated by microbial community is applied for the germination of seeds of paddy and wheat and growth of seedling exhibits significant reduction in toxicity of contaminant present in effluent.
